Trade Naked
The line between reality and imagination is bridged as plants from the artist’s garden, and Middle Eastern desert motifs are transformed into silhouettes against stark black grounds. Trade Naked refers to maverick investing strategies in which options are written against vulnerable, phantom stocks. Notions of outward, physical travel into new, unknown worlds.
Distant Theatres
Solo Installation and Exhibition at Bernard Toale Gallery in Boston (2008) Installation and ExhbitExhibitionWith themes of cultural overlap and dislocation, Distant Theatres reflects on the proposed deployment of US military bases, dubbed “lily pad deployment” throughout Central Asia. (Lily pad Deployment: horrific misappropriation by the American military: conflating the name of an ancient flower held as a sacred symbol of rebirth for centuries in these very “distant” regions.)
Stylized lotus flowers and water lilies drawn from ancient/contemporary sources and 18th Century textile designs swirl in larger-than-life scale. The distinctions between the aura of the original sources, culture, nature, mass produced images and political commentary are convened.
