CultureSwirl 2007
Permanent commission for the New York Subway
Norwood STATION on the J Line in Brooklyn
Using design, pattern and color as cultural expression, CultureSwirl links the early 17th-19th century Dutch and English history in the area of the Norwood subway station with the current vibrant Caribbean and African American community.
CultureSwirl features large-scale floral designs drawn from historic Dutch and English sources combined with curling, swirling patterns of African textiles and ornate wrought iron doors and gates that now proliferate in the neighborhood. The color palate reflects the tropical climate and traditional cultural heritage of the current community residents.
Each windscreen presents one overall image that spans the three separate panels. A transition in background color across the seven windscreens, from yellow to blue, east to west, references the rising sun and the color of the sky, from dawn to midday.
