Folded Language
A site specific installation for Artist: The Public Intellectual at Kashi Townhouse Art Gallery, curated by Tanya Abraham and sponsored by Edgar Pinto for the Kochi-Muziris Biennale Collateral Projects 2016.
Paintings created with cut-up contemporary Indian saris. Folded Language embraces aspects of Kochi’s trade, colonialism and commerce in which pattern migration is both exploited and celebrated.
Pattern migration: contemporary sari patterns now embrace international sources drawn from pop cultural, digital and political designs. Environmentally synthetic materials replace traditional cottons and silks. From a political perspective, pattern migration acts as a metaphor for current economic worker migration in Southeast Asia and the Sub-continent as textile production centers continually shift in the world.
