Artist Statement

My work investigates cross currents of world decorative traditions in relation to contemporary cultural, political, and environmental narratives. Conflicting or nefarious references embedded within centuries old opulent patterns are explored. Reflecting trends of global cacophony, contemporary geopolitics are inscribed with centuries-old decorative forms.

My practice is influenced by a background of living and working as an artist in India, Japan, Southeast Asia, North Africa, and Europe. Thus, transcultural influences from Buddhism, Islamic architecture, nature, trade and industry are perennial reference points in my work.

Working in a series and concept-based approach, my work strives for openness with multiple points of entry and exploration. Various recent works have included silkscreened and collaged textile paintings, wall installations of digital botanical imprints and cropped mosque floor plans from the Islamic diaspora, and a series of porcelain royal crowns exploring the political dominance embedded in their symbolically patterning. Series-specific media is used: painting, silkscreen, stamping, digital technology, textiles and ceramics. Modern painting traditions such as the grid, the monochromatic, op art, the repetitive formalism of Minimalism, and the Pattern and Decoration movement also inform my work.
