Strategy Royale 2020

A collaborative work With choreographer Mari Meade
Curated by Norte Maar: Julia Gleich and Jason Andrew for CounterPointe 8 Series

With swirling multicolored, patterned textile panels, dancers create dramatic, comic cliques of shifting allegiances. Caucusing, strategizing, cajoling, each dancer vies for power. The repetition, rhythm, and character development of the choreography mirrors the pulsating, electronic music: an Italian hyper-baroque industrial soundtrack: dark, weird, bright and mischievous.
Silkscreened and stamped patterns on harlequin print rayon, silver brocade, sari fabric, and magenta Thai silk panels mask and reveal the dancers.  Referencing political banners, royal capes, and nomadic tents, the textile panels embody specific regal colors and aspects of heraldic flags including fringes, and pointed or swallow-tailed shapes. The scale of the panels: 1.10 meters or 43” square, adheres to the ordained banner size for the rank of Earl in Scotland. The ballet premiered on February 28, 1920 at the Mark Morris O'Donnell Theatre in Brooklyn.
